The Yeti lineup is expanding once more!
We are pleased to introduce the Yeti 6" and Yeti 7", these frames have been specifically optimised for mid and long range exploring and cruising.
Again, team pilot SloJoe, took up the challenge of testing these out for us. I love it when Joe calls me up and says, "so I was thinking". This is always the start of some crazy and exciting journey which inevitably leads us down the FPV rabbit hole and into something we haven't yet tried, considered or figured out. I'm never really sure what to expect, but we are never disappointed and always have some cool stories to tell and a good couple laughs at the end of it.
So with Joe's infectious enthusiasm and excitement for long range cruising, it wasn't long before Bryan (a.k.a. REDLDR) and Luke (FailSafeFPV) were also on-board for this project. Luke has done quite a bit of work on bigger heavy lifting quadcopters and filming rigs. Bryan was one of the OG 6" racers from back in the day, so he was naturally excited about running bigger props and motors and figuring out how to go further than we had ever been before.
These guys wanted something for exploring and going further than the average 5" frame could. It had to be as light as possible but still give the space necessary for stacking components, GPS, camera for recording and all the other bits and pieces necessary for safely completing a long range mission.
Before we continue, the number one most critical factor which all long rangers ask me, is how much does it weigh?
The Yeti 6" with standard stainless steel hardware comes in at 87grams and its bigger brother the Yeti 7" weighs 99grams with the same stainless steel hardware kit.
With that question out the way, lets speak about some of the other features we have introduced here.
We decided to use the Yeti fuselage for this project as it had loads of space and you can easily stack 4 boards into it, bonus!
Arms! We had to go bigger on the arms, much, much bigger than I initially expected. The issue wasn't so much the problem of fitting the 7" propeller around the fuselage of Yeti, but rather the props in your camera view at low cruising angles of attack. Solution, we kept the symmetric individual arm idea but compressed the planform as much as was practical to get the props out of the camera view. So what you end up with is a 99gram, 7" cruising machine, ready to explore and go further than you ever thought possible with your regular 5" frame.
And the speed! You wouldn't believe the speed which these bigger prop machines have, they are really something which should be tried at least once!
The road to figure out the frame, arms and planform was quite a long one, but well worth it.
Have we finished? Absolutely not!
We are busy expanding our ever growing 3D print library, now with a Yeti LR (long Range) folder, specifically for guys wanting to explore with bigger machines.
If you have specific 3D print requirements or feel we could improve the frame or the 3D prints themselves please get in contact with us, email us directly at email@example.com, we are always trying to improve and your feedback is greatly valued and appreciated.
After all, we produce batch frames and not production line frames!
We only release a new batch of frames if we have improved from the previous batch. Every single batch of frames we have ever released has been released because there was an improvement we could introduce from the previous batch! The improvements we introduce are based on the feedback we receive from you, our community of pilots, resellers and team pilots alike.
Hope you guys enjoy!
Yeti, is a blend between the raw brute strength of Taboo and the simplicity and light weight of Apex. As with Taboo, you can still drive a car over it, but it now comes with a 30% weight saving.
Yeti is a 215mm MTM, stretched-X design, weighing in at 73grams with the titanium fastener pack and 80grams with the standard stainless steel fastener pack.
This frame features full 3mm thick front and rear side plates and a 3mm thick base plate, 4 individual arms are a 3 bolt pattern and 4mm thick.
This frame features a full 35mm internal cavity for protecting your quadruple electronics stack and space to fit either mini, micro or nano cameras.
You gain easy access to your stack by flipping the two top rails of the frame up.
Yeti has is a really good all-round frame for racing, freestyle and long-range. There will be a 7” option coming soon for the guys looking for a simple reliable long range frame.
(For the full story and prototyping phase of this frame see below)
We have had loads of comments from loyal customers about not wanting to wait the 4 week pre-order we run on first release for our frames! We do this to give ourselves a little extra time to make sure we get your order correct, mistakes do happen, especially when you are releasing a new product, we do our utmost to make sure mistakes don’t happen.
For you guys who cannot wait for pre-order and want Lycan right now, we have introduced pre-production. These frames are identical to the pre-order frames which will be released, without the chamfered edging and finishing of production frames.
These are the exact same frames our team pilots fly!
We will release a very limited number of these frames before we do our pre-orders.
If this option is for you keep in contact with us and up-to-date, to find out exact release dates. Obviously, loyal customers who truly believe in our products and what we do, get extras and a small discount when they take a pre-production frame from us.
Included in the Kit
4 x 4mm carbon fibre arms (Toray T300 UD Carbon)
2 x 2mm carbon fibre top chassis plates
1 x 3mm carbon fibre main chassis plate
2 x 3mm carbon fibre camera side plates (notched to indicate cam angle)
2 x 3mm carbon fibre rear side plates
4 x 16mm M3 button cap bolts
8 x 12mm M3 button cap bolts
2 x 8mm M3 button cap bolts
4 x M3 aluminium nylock nuts
2 x 16mm aluminium standoff
6 x press nuts
Fasteners have been matched up together in separate packets to make it easier to assemble the frame.
1 x Battery Pad (low density foam, keeps it light, self-adhesive backing keeps it in place)
1 x Zip-tie pack
For the guy’s conscious of weight for racing, component selection is key and a minimalistic approach to your build is key.
As this frame is a multi-role platform recommending a AUW here would be pointless, obviously a lighter frame for long range will get you further, for racing a lighter frame may be what you are looking for or perhaps you like the feel and flight characteristics of a frame with a bit more weight behind it.
Yeti is designed to take a quadruple electronics stack, either 20x20mm or 30x30mm, and either a 14x14mm, 19x19mm, or mini 22x22mm camera.
Please contact us, we would love to hear from you!
If you have any questions or comments, or you would like to get more details and info about Lycan or anything else we do, please get hold of us, else email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
We do understand that nothing in this life is perfect, but we do constantly try to improve, refine and better what we have done previously. We would love to hear your experience, both good and bad.
The Full Story
Yeti was designed for team pilot Joe Venter, AKA slojoefpv. Joe is an amazing pilot and his main focus is racing, but even now and then Joe likes to take a break from racing and just cruise!
Joe said to me he wanted something that was tough for racing and he wasn’t too concerned if it wasn’t the lightest racer out there, he actually enjoyed how a frame flew with a little extra weight.
This was cool for me, as we have been doing a bunch of prototyping lately, probably a year or so now, an almost entirely the focus has been weight. Joe really enjoys creating content, YouTube and Instagram in particular, and he has mentioned a couple times he would like a frame for carrying an HD camera on scenic and long range missions. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to combine a tough, simple race frame with the flexibility and HD camera carrying capability of a freestyle frame.
Joe said he was looking for something with the strength and toughness of Taboo and the light-weight and simplicity of Apex. So, this is where we started, give it 4 individual arms, a tough and protective exterior which would protect your quadruple high stack in the centre and offer options for carrying extra equipment, sensors and a full HD camera if you wanted.
We went back and forth a couple times and then I finally came up with an idea which I thought would work, not so! We busted up and destroyed about 4 prototypes before we even came close to what Joe was looking for. Another 3 or so prototypes were designed and tested each time tweaking and refining to get to the final production version of what we now know to be Yeti.
Joe has also been testing out some add-on extras for the frame, namely printable pods, fairings for racing and also some GoPro session mounts for long range and freestyle. When we have some more details available on these we will make them available on the store and put up the STL files so everyone can download and print their own files at home.
Hope you enjoy.
